The file extension .wmv can be used for many different quality levels of multimedia: lower-resolution streaming, high-quality video presentation and ultra-high quality high definition television (HDTV) and Blu-Ray disc formats. It is also associated with similar Microsoft Windows formats like the .wma file extension which is used for Windows Media Audio files.
Microsoft protects its .wmv file extension with the protection of digital rights management (DRM), which links the files to unique serial numbers on personal computer motherboards and other internal hardware, so that they cannot be used by other computers. This DRM is an access control technology. It establishes administrator and owner permissions to use products - limiting the number of viewings or copies that can be made - this standard also goes by the name PlayForSure. It is meant to prevent unauthorized copying of .wmv file extension products. |
